~ Perfume buttons have an underlay of velvet fabric, hair, or silk thread with a pierced, ornate brass overlay. During the time of the Victorian Era, perfumes were oil based, and would soil women's clothing if used on the skin. These buttons were designed so ladies could dab their perfume on the underlay of the button, therefore protecting their clothing and carrying the scent all day. During times of war, women would often give these buttons, scented with their perfume, to a husband or lover going off to war. He would stitch it under his uniform collar as a reminder of the love he left behind.
